Today, on the fourth Sunday of Advent, we light the candle of LOVE, which is in reality, the heart of the Christmas message. "God so LOVED the world that He GAVE His only begotten Son....." This candle is a reminder that God stepped out into the darkness of sin to bring the light of salvation to us. Long before Jesus took His first breath in Bethlehem's stable, God was preparing the world for His arrival. He chose a humble place, a humble family, wrapping His gift of LOVE in 'swaddling clothes' which were often large muslin blankets or specialized wraps, used to snugly wrap newborns to mimic the womb, thereby giving them a calming effect after birth. Into this humble, earthly beginning came the second person of the Triune God—Jesus, the Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Prince of Peace!
Three Types of Givers
Someone has identified three types of givers—
1. The "Duty-Gift" Giver.
This person has an obligation to buy a gift; it really doesn't matter what it is, just so long as it will serve the purpose.
The intent is that you give a gift so you will get something back from the other person.
You are not really into choosing the 'right' gift or the 'perfect' gift—anything will do.
2. The "Traditional Gift" Giver.
This person always chooses something "appropriate" to give.
It might be a book for a coffee table. It is not really a "personal" gift,
but it is acceptable and it never goes over budget.
3. The "Passionate Giver."
This giver enthusiastically looks for just the right gift and knows the person well enough to say,
"I know that this is something he/she needs" or "this is something I know he/she has been wanting."
The giver knows the right color and size and doesn't mind going over budget if need be.
The gift fits the needs or desires of the recipient, and the giver is simply happy to give it.
I think we could say that God was a "Passionate Giver" when He gave the gift of His Son. He knew His gift of love was something we all needed, and He was happy to give it.
As Hallmark Cards used to say years ago: "When you care enough to send the very best."
Yes, God gave His very best because He loves us!
